Assembled from a number of synthetic single-strand DNA, a conventional tile has a rigid structural core and several affinity encoding sticky ends that guide the tiles to assemble into crystal structures. A key open question is: what is the minimal form a DNA tile? A natural answer would be a tile that is void of the structural core and contains only the affinity bearing sticky ends. I describe in this talk a set of such simplistic tiles, each of which is a short flexible single strand DNA. These single-strand DNA tiles assemble into crystals of 1D (chains) and 2D (ribbons, tubes) connectivity. Of particular interest is the kinetic-trapping based construction of molecular tubes with precisely programmed circumferences. Biography: Peng Yin is a post-doctoral scholar at California Institute of Technology. He is affiliated with Caltech's Center for Biological Circuit Design, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Bioengineering. At Caltech, he works primarily with Prof. Niles Pierce and Prof. Erik Winfree. His current research interests focus on engineering self-assembled nucleic acid molecular devices and structures.
